In order to keep our field ends clean from dust, foot traffic and mites we use fabia beans at the end of the rows. The fabia bean plant grows higher than the strawberries which stops the dust from the dirt roads from reaching the strawberry plants on the end of the rows. The workers have to walk around them instead of on top of the beds, thus not smashing the end of the rows. They also attract lady bugs in the first of the season that are very beneficial. This is one part of our IPM program. In our Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program we also disperse millions of Persimulis mites into the field. These mites actually eat the two spotted mites that suck down the strawberry plants.
